A reader emailed about the below grassroots group:
Damascus Citizens for Self-Government and Friends, LLC
From the website linked above, "CITIZENS' GROUP FORMED IN
Regarding Gas Drilling - It Is Not a Benign Activity . . .
We are a grassroots group in
"Damascus Citizens for Self-Government and Friends, LLC" - abbreviated as DCS.
We are working very hard to prevent the dire effects of gas well drilling, such as polluted drinking water, carcinogens in the farmland and food chain, torn-up roads, risk of gas fires, plummeting real estate values, and screeching noise pollution."
I want to contact like minded people. I oppose gas drilling, twenty wells in my area have been poisoned, I have property in Dimock, Pa. I weep for the constant noise ofthe drills, the damage to water tables and wildlife. Can nothing be done?>
ReplyDeleteThe approach taken in Santa Fe County, New Mexico was to adopt an oil & gas ordinance.
ReplyDeleteThe easiest way to approach the Santa Fe County Oil & Gas Ordinance may be the following. Firstly, the current oil & gas ordinance is a stand alone ordinance that will eventually give way to become an element of the overall growth management plan, which is being drafted. Please note that I am not an attorney and any errors or misrepresentation of the facts is not intentional, but I will do the best to my ability.
The SF Co. website has a dedicated page to the oil & gas ordinance and process. (See link: http://www.santafecounty.org/oilandgas/ )
A document to review first would be the draft Power Point presentation at:
http://www.santafecounty.org/oilandgas/documents/FIRSTDRAFTPLANORDINANCEPPT.pdf
The presentation was conducted by the SF County contract attorney, Dr. Freilich: http://www.freilichpopowitz.com/staff.html .
Although there were changes to the draft before final adoption, the presentation above is helpful for an overview. Please note that it begins by referencing the Galisteo Basin report ( http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/MAIN/documents/Galisteo.Basin.Report.pdf 3.84MG -- a large file) called upon by Governor Richardson through an Executive Order and compiled by the Oil Conservation Division: http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/ocd/ .
